A look at the Brindellone
Today special guided visits are taking place in Via Il
Prato 48 to see the Brindellone, the
ceremonial chart used for thetraditional Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) on Easter morning in Piazza del Duomo.
It’s a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages, associated with Pazzino
de’ Pazzi, who is said to have returned from the First Crusade with sacred stones
that are used to ignite the Easter cart, aka the Brindellone.
When it’s not used for the ceremony, the cart is kept in a deposit in Cia il
Prato, made especially to fit the Brindellone. The name derives from the florentine
dilect, indicating a tall person with an awkward and unsteady gait.
This special opening of the Brindellone depot will be a unique opportunity to
see the carriage and learn about its history, as well as admire the tallest
door in Europe still in use for civil buildings.
Don't miss it! Tours will be held from 3:00 PM to 6:00
PM. Guided tours are every hour from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM; the last tour and
closing of the Brindellone depot gate are at 6:00 PM.
Admission is free.
