Painting online
Three will be the painting techniques studied during this course:
Oil Painting
Oil colors are made by mixing pigments with linseed oil and are applied through a series of glazes on canvas, which must be prepared for painting with a layer of acrylic gesso.
Participants should present themselves to the lesson with an image of the work they intend to copy.
Program:
– Drawing and cardboard preparation
– Transferring the drawing on canvas/paper though dusting (spolvero) or carbon paper or paper previously prepared with a glaze of color diluted with turpentine
– Underpainting layer in monochrome starting from dark to light with burnt amber diluted with turpentine (grisaille)
– Preparation of different color gradations
– Body colors put from dark to light one next to the other and blended with a clean brush
– Details and finishes
Egg tempera
Egg tempera is an ancient water-based type of painting, widely used in Florence from the 13th to the 14th century. Pigments are mixed with egg yolk and then applied in glazes, on a special support prepared with plaster of Bologna (ammannitura).
For our virtual lessons, we will follow the rules of the “The Craftsman’s handbook (Il Libro dell’Arte)” by Cennino Cennini.
Participants should present themselves to the lesson with an image of the work they intend to copy.
If you can’t find ready-made egg tempera colors, you can replace them with gum tempera such as gouache.
Program:
- Drawing preparation
– Cardboard preparation for dusting (spolvero) or use of carbon paper
– Preparation of the wooden board with gesso
– Transfer of the drawing on a wooden board or on paper
– Preparation of different color gradations
– First transparent layer, like watercolor
– Body color and hatch gradient
– Details and finishing touches
Watercolor
Watercolor is a water based technique of painting in which the pigments are dissolved and mixed with arabic gum and then applied on a special paper through a series of successive glazes.
Participants should present themselves to the lesson with an image they intend to copy.
Program:
– Light drawing on previously moistened paper
– First layer
– Preparation of different color gradations
– Subsequent glazes to create blendings and contrasts
– Details and finishes
Each lesson lasts 60 minutes.
