Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Diverging paths of Mannerism

8 March - 20 July 2014, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Italy

Opening hours 9am – 8pm, on Thursdays 9am – 11pm

Access allowed until one hour before closing time

On 8 March begins an exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi dedicated to Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, the exponents in Florence of the season that, in the Italian XVI century, Giorgio Vasari called the “Modern Manner”. The exhibition consists of a chronologic path which illustrates the main works of these two artistic personalities, both Andrea del Sarto’s pupils who though later approached different and diverging walks of life. Pontormo, a distrustful and difficult personality, Cosimo I de’ Medici’s favourite artist, stayed very active in Florence; Rosso, whose most famous work is the “Deposition from the Cross” in Volterra, has travelled much, landing at the french court of Francis I, where he became court painter. This exhibit is without any doubt a unique event, which for the first time finds reunited the two artists’ masterpieces, coming from Italy and abroad. You can admire canvas, drawings, tapestries. Many of the exhibited works have been restorated just for the occasion, like the “Visitation of Carmignano” by Pontormo.
