The Arch of Palmyra arrives in Florence!

Previously put on display in London, New York and Dubai, a replica of the monumental Arch of Palmyra, has now been placed in Piazza Signoria.
It's one of the signs that Florence prepares for the G7 of Culture, that will be held in the city on March 30 and 31, 2017.

The Palmyra’s arch was a Roman ornamental archway, built in the III century during the reign of emperor Septimius Severus and was destroyed in 2015 by ISIS.
Once rebuilt, the monument started a symbolic tour around the world that aims to draw the attention of the international public opinion on the fight against terrorism and the importance of preserving the artistic and cultural heritage of humanity.
The 11-ton arch, reproduced in the city of Carrara using a 3D computer model and carving robots, was created by Torart - a company specialized in sculpture, contemporary art and design - merging traditional handcrafted carving tecniques with advanced technology.

In addition to the reproduction of the Arch of Palmyra, there will be exhibitions, conventions, meetings and the double concert conducted by Riccardo Muti in the Salone dei Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio and at Teatro dell’Opera.
The Chimera of Arezzo along with a sketch of the Etruscan bronze statue and a bust of Cosimo I, both by Baccio Bandinelli, will also be on display in the Room of Leo X at palazzo Vecchio, where Cosimo I de Medici requested the statue be displayed after its discovery in the mid-sixteenth century.

The arch of Palmyra will be staying in Florence for a month, so don't miss the opportunity to go and see it up close with your own eyes!
