Back to 1927 with Salvatore Ferragamo

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of Salvatore Ferragamo’s return to Italy from America, the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum has put on another great exhibition, that merges fashion and art to transport us back to the 1927 Florence.

Carlo Sisi curated the exhibition that opened in May, entitled “1927 - The Return to Italy. Salvatore Ferragamo and the visual culture of the 20th-century”, conceiving a spectacular set up that revives the athmosphere of the Roma, the transatlantic that travelled from the United States to Italy in the 1920s. Entering the exhibition, visitors feel just like one of those tourists and businessmen transported by the ship, among which there was also the great Salvatore Ferragamo.

Salvatore, still a sixteen years old boy, left Italy in 1914 to find fortune in America and live with his two brothers in Boston, both working in a shoe factory. That was the beginning of the great shoemaker we know today. He later opened a shoe repairing shop in Santa Barbara, and then moved to Hollywood and in his Hollywood Boot Shop he earned the name of “Shoemaker of the stars”.
After 13 years of activity in the United States, Salvatore Ferragamo, boarded the ship to come back to Italy, choosing Florence as his destination to set up a factory and start his brand, drawn by the artistic fervour and above all the craftsmanship culture of the city.

The exhibition aims to recreate the atmosphere of Florence in the 1927, filling up the rooms set up to look like the inside of a ship, with artworks by Colacicchi, Martini, Rosai, Balla, Maccari, Depero, and sculptures by Thayat. we also find ceramic pieces by Richard Ginori,, clothing and obviously the beautiful Ferragamo shoes manufactured at that time.
If you haven't seen the exhibition yet, you have time until May 2. Board the ship and let the cobalt blue on the walls, the beautifully vintage flavoured setup, the artworks, the shoes and every other item on display, take you on the most amazing journey inside the visual culture of the 1920s.
