The Bargello for Dante

The Bargello, former seat of the Podestà and prison where the condemned suffered the most terrible tortures, preserves many memories linked to Dante and pays him homage with an exhibition and important restorations, in the 700th anniversary of his death.
The exhibition entitled Honorable and ancient citizen of Florence. The Bargello for Dante (11 May - 8 August 2021), tells the relationship between Dante and Florence, and the years following the poet's death through works of art and manuscripts from international libraries, archives and museums.

In addition to the exhibition, it will be possible to admire the newly restored frescoes in the Donatello room, the place where the sentence of exile of the Sommo Poeta was proclaimed.
Here is the oldest portrait of Dante, made between 1321 and 1337 by Giotto and workshop in a pictorial cycle where the Stories of the Magdalene, of San Giovanni Battista, Hell and Heaven are depicted.
It is within the cycle of Paradise, that Dante is depicted receiving the poetic laurel from Apollo.
If you were looking for one more reason to visit the Bargello - one of the most important Renaissance sculpture museums in the world - this is your chance!
